Our specialist department maintains very strong links with local social services such as the Citizens Advice Bureau, domestic violence units, contact and family centres.
Throughout our involvement with any party that we are assisting on issues of family breakdown our aim is to settle issues as fairly and as speedily as possible.
Our focus is on the key issues and you will be advised as to whether you are able to pursue divorce proceedings, the grounds available and its consequences.
There may be personal or religious reasons that you do not wish to commence divorce proceedings and advice can be given about separation.
We are able to give advice to mixed sex and same sex couples who are intending to, or have, separated.
We attempt to avoid and advise against the use of family resources to fund a dispute.
Advice is given in respect of divorce and separation including separation agreements and pre-nuptial agreements.
Several of our specialist team are members of the Solicitors Family Law Association (SFLA) which means that the SFLA has recognised them as specialist within particular areas of family law. Some of our team are members of the Law Society Children's Panel which means that the Law Society has recognised them as specialist in children law.
The merger is the union of two high quality complementary businesses, which together create a new regional law practice. Innovative and progressive, BTMK is a full service law firm and prides itself on its expertise, creativity and results. |

Divorce is an unfortunate fact of life and a great deal of unhappiness is generated by mistrust, ill-advised behaviour and unrealistic expectations on separation. This guide does not provide all the answers but it will help you to understand the legal process better and appreciate what steps have to be taken, and why. It also provides you with some useful addresses of organisations that can help with the emotional stress and practical problems of divorce and separation particularly where children are concerned.
Just because you and your partner can no longer live together does not mean that you should no longer communicate. It is very important, particularly where children are concerned, that lines of communication are kept open so that the opportunities for mistrust and polarisation of views are limited. This can be extremely difficult when emotions are running high but a good solicitor can help in soothing fears and providing reliable advice on what is and is not possible in your particular situation. Inevitably, the cost of running two households is going to be more expensive than one and something will have to give. Being realistic about how family income and assets might be divided is a vital first step on the path to a fair settlement.
Even so it is sometimes necessary to protect and preserve assets until agreement can be reached. For example, joint Bank accounts and Credit cards can be abused; valuable assets can be "spirited away" and the value of the matrimonial home reduced by additional borrowing. Legal protection is available to prevent such abuses. Such protection can also ensure your right to occupy a particular property, your right to dispose of your own property by Will as you wish and your right to share in property belonging solely to your partner.
It is therefore very important to consult a solicitor as early as possible to confirm your legal rights and the steps, if any, that need to be taken to protect those rights. |
