13. Solicitors in Portsmouth - Gurney-Champion & Co.
We offer a sympathetic and professional approach to dealing with divorce. We can draw up the divorce petition and submit this to the Court.
Once this is issued, we can apply for the second stage of divorce, called Decree Nisi. Normally once six weeks have elapsed we can then apply for Decree Absolute, the final stage of the proceedings.
Usually one of the most important factors in the break up of a family are the children. Deciding who they should live with is the first step. Often the absent parent will wish to see the children and we can help deal with these arrangements. An important legal concept is "parental responsibility" which can give someone the rights and responsibilities of being a parent.

14. UK Solicitor, Divorce Settlement
With statistics of 1 in 3 marriages ending in divorce and many unmarried people living together, the end of a relationship now entails far more than a simple parting and a solicitor is often involved.
All Herrington & Carmichael matrimonial lawyers are highly experienced professionals, members of the Solicitors Family Law Association, and familiar with the emotions and conflict divorce can bring. They help our clients through the legal complexities involved in splitting assets, making provision for the children and finalising the divorce.
In appropriate cases, the use of mediation is recommended as a means of achieving an amicable settlement, and can also help speed up the process and cut costs.
Benefits can be
Better solutions reached by the parties themselves.
Powerful messages to the children of their parents working together on their behalf.
Total confidentiality and impartiality.
Quicker solutions at less personal and financial.
Protects legal rights but most mediations end in agreement.
Resolve any other financial issues.
These decisions can then be passed directly to the Court as part of the final divorce settlement. Resolution of differences made in these circumstances can not only speed up the process, but reduce costs. They are also very much tailored to individual needs, with each partner having an equal opportunity to voice their opinions and desires. The non-confrontational atmosphere reduces conflict and aids communication, thus making an amicable agreement far more likely.
One of the first solicitors to offer mediation in the UK.
Herrington & Carmichael were one of the first solicitors in the UK to offer this unique scheme and now have many years of experience in resolving the conflicts of divorce and separation.
Highly experienced mediator Richard Whittington is a fully trained mediator who has been involved in family law since he qualified in 1978. He was Chairman of the Surrey Heath Domestic Violence Forum and a member of the Family Mediators Association and The U.K. College of Mediators. He is also a member of the Family Law Panel. His extensive experience of handling mediation puts him in an ideal position to remove conflict from the negotiations.
The speed with which the law changes today can be breathtaking. That's why it is so important to take good legal advice. Herrington & Carmichael has been offering high quality legal advice and representation to clients - in clear, jargon-free language - for well over a century. Although we strongly believe in the traditional values of excellent service and value for money, our clients appreciate our innovative, proactive and friendly approach to all their legal concerns.

20. Mackarness & Lunt Solicitors, Petersfield
At Mackarness & Lunt we have wide experience of divorce, family law, disputes between parents as to their children and financial matters. We are committed to dealing with family matters in a sympathetic manner and in a way that seeks to reduce bitterness and trauma.
The proceedings for a divorce can be complicated and advice is needed on how to start and respond to the action. Arrangements for residence and contact with the children need careful consideration.
Financial matters following the breakdown are of vital importance to the parties and Samantha will be able to assist by negotiating an agreement. If agreement cannot be reached then the parties need realistic advice and expert preparation and representation at a Court hearing.
Advice can be given as to the assessment of child support payable under the Child Support Act and how the Child Support Agency may become involved. The tax implications of maintenance orders are also most important.
Sometimes couples do not wish formally to end their marriage at the time of breakdown. They may wish to enter into a deed of separation. This is a written agreement setting out the terms agreed as to financial matters and property. It can also deal with arrangements for children and when there should be divorce proceedings.
If divorce follows, the Court may be asked to make an order in accordance with the terms of the deed. It is vital therefore to have the terms of any agreement properly negotiated with full disclosure being made on both sides.
Breakdown of relationships between unmarried couples causes many of the same problems but the legal position may be very different in relation to their property and sometimes also their children. We have wide experience of these problems and the legal remedies available.
A mediator can help you work out arrangements with your partner. A mediator does not decide any issues, you do. The mediator is simply there to help. We can refer you to experienced mediators
First, we recommend that you arrange a no ? obligation fixed fee initial consultation with us limited to a cost of ?40 which includes the VAT. but if work commitments restrict this then it may be possible for this to take place over the telephone.
This is an opportunity for you to discuss with us your particular circumstances and we can advise you on what to do next.
At the end of the fixed fee consultation you have a number of options open to you, you may even decide not to take any further action at this stage. We will however keep all details from our meeting should you wish to return in the future.
We can give you a fixed fee quote to complete your divorce or prepare your deed of separation. A simple, non-contested divorce can cost as little as ?600/?700 plus VAT. In any divorce case there are also fees to be paid to the court. These are currently ?300 payable when the petition is filed and ?40 to apply for the Decree Absolute at the end of the case.
I am proud to work in the very same building as my great-great-uncle who moved from Alresford to Petersfield at the turn of the century, and then to the present offices in 1925.However, this does not mean that we are just looking to the past. Sensitive investment in new technology has meant that we can achieve our aim of providing up to the minute legal services, without sacrificing our reputation as a friendly partnership with a firm base in the community.
