In November 2004 the Civil Partnerships Bill was passed by Parliament. The first civil partnership will be capable of being registered by 21 December 2005. For same sex couples, this is the equivalent of the Velvet Revolution. Same sex couples will have to all intents and purposes, the same rights and obligations as heterosexual married couples.

Once registered, a civil partnership will only be capable of dissolution, in the same way that a heterosexual marriage is dissolved; namely through a process which is, as near as makes no odds, to divorce. There will be the same financial implications on the dissolution of a partnership, as there is on a heterosexual divorce. On the face of it, civil partners can claim maintenance, capital settlement and provision under the Inheritance Act 1975.

2. Blocks Solicitors - Ipswich, Suffolk, East Anglia
We all hope that problems within a family can be settled without involving lawyers but where legal action does threaten we at Blocks Solicitors offer both a sympathetic ear and practical advice and support through separation and divorce proceedings and through family and child-care cases.

Our family law team is headed by Ben French and Michael Sheehan. Both are members of the Solicitors' Family Law Association and Michael is a member of the Law Society's Child Care Panel. Ben is a member of the Law Society's Family Panel.

It is our aim to keep tension and stress to a minimum and by offering practical and pragmatic advice to help resolve issues. There are times when issues cannot be resolved without Court proceedings and in those Court proceedings we will represent your best interests in seeking to achieve your desired result.

Problems relating to children are unhappily all too common. Where parents wish to resolve matters about children without the intervention of the State this is known as Private Law. Where local authorities become involved this area of law is known as Public Law. It includes care proceedings and in this area .Michael Sheehan leads our team. It is important for you to know at the outset of any transaction what the work is likely to cost and whether or not you will be eligible for legal aid.

It is not always possible for us to give our clients an accurate estimate of fees because their transaction may become more protracted or more complex than was originally anticipated. We will, however, make clear how our charges will be calculated and give as realistic an estimate as possible of the likely cost.

The amount we charge is usually dependent upon the length of time we spend on a case. We have an accurate computerised time- recording system so that we can tell how long any job has taken and we calculate our bill based upon an hourly charging rate. Details of this rate will be given to you before you instruct us to act for you.

3. Birketts Solicitors : Legal Services
The Family & Matrimonial Unit work with the Wealth Management team and offer a complete service. Their advice is practical and robust - designed to achieve the best possible result for you, the client.

Oliver Gravell, who heads the Family Team, trained with the first batch of Collaborative Lawyers in the UK, and is at the forefront of the movement to make this type of divorce resolution process widespread throughout the country.

He is identified as 'the partner to watch' in Chambers Guide to the Legal Profession 2006 and as 'courteous, humorous, firm yet fair, extremely knowledgeable in his field, well-respected, efficient, and very keen at all times to meditate rather than litigate for financial gain' in Legal 500.

Birketts is a long established and highly successful practice with offices in Ipswich and Norwich, having 27 partners and a total staff in excess of 190. We are large enough, therefore, to provide specialist skills in most areas of law, but small enough to maintain a personal service.

Our most important asset is the professional skill and integrity of our lawyers. We are committed to employing and retaining personnel with the experience and technical expertise necessary to ensure we are equipped to meet our clients' objectives.

Our reputation is of durability and reliability, combined with innovative applications of modern technology. We are flexible about everything except the professional and ethical standards which we maintain rigorously and with the confidence of our good name. This is reflected in the Law Society's practice management accreditation, "Lexcel" which we were awarded in 2001. Above all, we give value for money to our clients.

6. Prettys Solicitors
At Prettys our family law team are specialists and members of the Solicitors Family Law Association which promotes a non-confrontational approach to resolving legal matters in a practical way. We can offer collaborative law trained services, designed to avoid lengthy court litigation. There are, however, a small percentage of cases where resource to the court is the only option and our years of experience in litigation ensure a firm and considered approach if negotiation fails.

The decision to bring a relationship to an end is an extremely difficult one. Whilst the concept of the family unit may have changed considerably over recent years, the needs of individuals whose relationships break down remain the same. The breakdown of a relationship gives rise to a variety of legal problems as well as being very distressing to those involved.

If two people choose to cohabit, rather than marry, a judge does not have the same powers to divide income, capital, property and pension. However, either party could argue an interest or right by contribution to an asset that is owned by the other, such as a house. Property and other assets may also have been bought in joint names during the relationship.

A cohabitation agreement can set out what each party intends to happen if the relationship ends, both to assets that existed before the relationship started and any accumulated during its course. Such an agreement legally binds the parties involved and is a step we would recommend to anyone considering cohabitation.

With careful planning, taxation can be minimised as ownership of a business passes between members of a family.

For example, business assets can often be gifted or passed on death free of inheritance tax. At present, a 100% deduction in value is allowed for tax purposes in respect of shares owned in most unquoted trading companies and partnership interests. The exceptions are where the business wholly or mainly deals in investments or property.

Kerseys? Family Law Department is a team of experienced and sympathetic people dedicated to helping clients ? whether married or unmarried ? through serious family troubles. One of our partners is a specialist in both civil litigation and family matters with a particular interest in child care cases. He is a school governor and has been a member of the Law Society?s Children Panel for many years.

We can help you negotiate the most delicate and emotionally upsetting of family problems with sensitivity coupled with practical efficiency.

The way we work
? Fair, acceptable settlement through negotiation is always the preferred solution, to save you stress and expense. If that?s not possible, then we will fight your case strongly through the courts.
? We encourage you to gather as much relevant information and documentation as you can, in order to lessen your costs.
? Our initial advice will include assessing whether you can handle the case, or elements of it, yourself. It?s another potential way you can contain expense.
? We prefer to give you a firm quotation of costs upfront; if that isn?t possible in your case, we?ll explain why.
? In child care cases we can advise you about eligibility for legal aid, though we only take on legal aid cases in exceptional circumstances. However, we can refer other such cases to a specialist firm.

We have 9 partners, supported by 5 retained consultant partners and a staff of 40 people. The professional team numbers 15 solicitors, a barrister, a chartered accountant and four legal executives. We work from a large suite of offices in central Ipswich - easy to find (see map) and with full facilities for clients and other visitors with disabilities.

The practice is well-equipped with technology. Case management software helps us work quickly and efficiently ? keeping costs down. We also have electronic books and precedents, providing access to online services. This keeps us up-to-date with the latest judgments, documents and legislative changes. In terms of communications, we converse with our clients on a day-to-day basis by email.

In 1953 the practice was sold and Bankes Ashton of Bury St. Edmunds bought the Stowmarket office. The firm then practised in Stowmarket as Bankes Ashton & Hayward.
