William Dennis founded the firm in 1838, practicing alone in Northampton's Horse market until 1876 when Dr. John Faulkner, a Doctor of Law of the University of London, became his partner. The firm became known as Dennis and Faulkner. In 1910, Charles Frederick Alsop joined as a partner, having previously been articled to Dr. Faulkner. This partnership resulted in the name Dennis Faulkner and Alsop, which has since been abbreviated to DFA.
